Woodcut by Choo Keng Kwang

Woodblock prints constitute an important tool for the examination and understanding of social and political conditions in pre- and post-independence Singapore. The prints cover the 1950s and 1960s, providing unrivalled insights into a particularly complex and tense period of local history. The woodcuts were produced by local artists who, though borrowing their technique and style from China, voiced concerns that were wholly Malayan, commenting candidly and openly on themes such as natural  disasters, political riots, race conflicts, matchmaking, money lending and idyllic kampung life.
