Down Memory Lane in Singapore:
Sunrise

Known to the world as The Grand Old Man of Photography, the Master Photographer selected Sunrise as a theme as he reflected about the fleeting years, as in doing this, he left a legacy to the world with this timeless and inspiring artistic creation, embodying several components including the sun, a worker walking along a country road and some plants forming the frame of the picture. The sun looks big and a little unreal but then it is the artist’s affairs and its greatness in this universe. The human figure signifies Man’s role as a worker, who has to toil from sunrise to sunset, as if in keeping with the rhythm of life and the seasons within the realm of Mother Nature. Yes, life is always in a pattern, Sunrise – Sunset.

Sunrise, sunset. Sunrise, sunset.
Swiftly fly the years,
One reason following another,
Ladened with happiness and tears.

The picture is superb as a poetically styled artistic creation using real elements. The picture is well balanced in terms of composition. Credit must be given to the photographer’s darkroom techniques. The process was highly creative, and it required a great deal of patience to get the correct background, composition and mood and the appropriate texture and tone of the picture. Noteworthy is the ability of the photographer to capture a poetic pose in this picture. This print was exhibited in many places and was well received in Lisbon, Rosario, Sri Lanka and other countries.

This picture is the artistic creation of Yip Cheong-Fun, the Master lensman to whom The Photographic Society of New York has conferred the title, “Outstanding Photographer of the Century,” for his work in seascape and other artistic achievements. He was also awarded the coveted 1984 Cultural  Medallion by the Singapore Government, the highest national award given to an individual for his or her achievement and contributions to art and culture. A memorial award in photography was named after Yip Cheong-Fun by the Photographic Society of Singapore.
